  • Descrizione: The Greek-American Peter Papas, who is on vacation with his wife in Greece, crashes into a taxi driver - only to realize that he is none other than his long-lost friend, Meletis, who is now married with six children. Twenty-five years earlier, the two men were assistants working for a Shadow Theater puppeteer, Stamatis Tranos, who believed that Shadow Theatre art was heading for extinction owing to the rise of the cinema. Aside from that, his young wife, Marika, has left him for a younger man, taking their daughter, Liza, with her. Together, Peter and Meletis look for Mr. Tranos, who has been reduced to a mental wreck and drunkard, and who spends his time wandering about entertaining children. The affluent Peter, hailed “the loafer” by Stamatis, offers the old man a life of ease at a very good hotel. The benevolent Meletis, “the slow-poke” as Stamatis’ used to call him, informs him of the whereabouts of his daughter, who is now the married mother of a young girl. Stamatis makes very subtle moves towards the child, not revealing his true identity, and plays with his granddaughter, who loves him dearly. Liza feels equally sympathetic towards him, and upon learning that this old Karagiozis puppeteer is sick, rushes to his side to tend to his needs. In the hospital she discovers that he is her father. Stamatis dies, twirling his beloved Karagiozis puppet before his granddaughter’s eyes.
